Quick update..

Just a very quick apology for being AWOL for a while - the epilepsy has/had got the better of me and blogging hasn't really been an option.

I had a lovely birthday last Tuesday when I was spoiled rotten so have lots of gorgeous things to review, so with camera at the ready and the help of my ever patient husband photos will be taken today with the aim of getting some reviews up.

Prescription glasses boring and expensive? Not with Glasses Direct!

On September the 4th last month I had some pretty rubbish news. Not the kind that rips families apart, but the kind that is a complete annoyance. I was diagnosed with bi-lateral cataracts (my blog entry about it is here).

It is quite hard to describe what I see but everything has a bit of a grey fog, especially around the outsides of lights. Apparently there are two types of cataract, ones when you see better in daylight and the other when you see better in the dark. Fortunately I fall into the latter  - well it is coming into Autumn and every cloud has to have a silver lining and all that! 

I mentioned that I was going to get a pair of glasses made up from Glasses Direct (their website is here), a cheaper pair and my NHS ones too for backups. There are an awful lot of things coming up very soon that require money - I have a birthday with a 0 on the end of it on Tuesday, the following Sunday it is one of my sons' 18th birthday, we have a bit of a break then on the 26 of this month is it my husband's birthday and on the 27th it is our first wedding anniversary. Please blame him for the timing of the last two as I let him choose what day we got married!

So, my new glasses came from Glasses Direct. They were, in a word, amazing. They called to check I had my prescription correct as it is quite a strong one, and were more than happy to answer any emails or phone calls I had.

I ordered my first pair from them on the 5th of September and even with quite a complex prescription they were with me on Friday the 13th of September. It took my local Optician (who, I hasten to add, is absolutely fantastic) until the 27th of September to get my NHS ones to me. 

By far, the glasses I got from Glasses Direct are the more comfortable, functional and better in every way. I won't harp on (again) but they have trained Opticians to answer your calls and emails and nothing is too much for them. They knew I was recently diagnosed with cataracts and talked me through everything that my own Optician didn't have time do (not due to the fact he didn't want to, it was more of a time constraint)

Browsing my emails on the 29th of September I saw that they had a HUGE Autumn sale on. 40% (yep, that is absolutely correct) off all glasses over £55. I couldn't pass up on the offer! 

This is what arrived on the 3rd of October. Now I make no secret of it that I live in the Isle of Man which is usually covered by "Highlands and Islands" for postage so I was a little pleased to say the least! First up - the quality of the cases is superb. Not quite sure you could run your car over them but I have sat my sizeable bum on them a couple of times and they more than take the pressure..

First up on the left we have "Vanessa" (here on the website) and on the right, "Audrey" (found here on their website). I know to most these probably aren't looking the most attractive glasses out there but I need something with a very large lens, and I actually adore the styles of these. "Vanessa" had wanted to be my initial purchase but was out of my price range at the time so I went with "Audrey" but in pink.   

"Vanessa" is a gorgeous brown and pink ombre effect, but is also available in both purple and blue colourways. They have a great lens size and are now for "best" when I go out. I love the almost 50's retro styling to them and they are incredibly comfortable to wear.

"Audrey" (named after Ms Hepburn herself) is a really oversized lens - which helps when you have cataracts. I am guessing they are a Marmite pair of glasses - people will either love them or hate them. I adore them and even though I have quite a small face, I have been assured by those that would tell me bluntly if they didn't look great on that they do. Again, the retro styling is what brought them to my attention (as well as already having a pair and loving them!).

All in all my buying experience with them has on both recent occasions been fantastic and their customer service phenomenal. From double checking the prescription of one rather upset person earlier on in the month to that said person now being the proud owner of 3 pairs of glasses for under £70 I couldn't be happier. 

At the prices that they have, I can now literally change my glasses through the seasons and to go with what I fancy wearing each day. That is before I decide which goes best with the makeup I want to wear on the day too! 

The website is incredibly comprehensive, showing you how to measure your glasses, how to make sure you get the right ones for the shape of your face - you name it. During office hours there is always someone to speak to you if you want some information or support.

You can even trial out frames at home to see what you think of them and buy your own prescription in sunglasses too.

I most certainly will be buying them online again, as the savings speak for themselves.

September Beauty Favourites

So here it is, the last day of September 2013. It has been a weird month for me - I have been wanting to get into the Autumn spirit but is has just been too warm for any of that! Saying that, the weather seems to have dried up, so it has been time to shake my face and body moisturising up, as well as a bit of my makeup. 

Some are re purchases, some are new things to try and there is one HG item in there for me too. Without further ado, here we go:-

Maybelline's Color Tattoo in Eternal Pink (new purchase, perfect base for nudes)

Maybelline's Color Tattoo in Metallic Pomegranate (new purchase and the purple smoky eye will be mine!)

Revlon Top Speed Nail Enamel in Stormy (new purchase of the perfect greige)

Avon's Mega Effects Mascara in Black (new purchase to see what the fuss is about. Glad I did as it works great for my short stubby lashes and keeps the curl in them too). Only problem is that it is an incredibly wet formula.

I could have gone on and on, but narrowing it down to this was hard enough. These are genuinely the things that I have bought new, repurchased and loved using this month. Fingers crossed that a lot of it will take me through to next month too.

Skeek MakeUP Vintage Romance Edition

Oh Sleek MakeUP - you have done it again. Seduced me hook line and sinker with another great blusher and palette. This time it is the Vintage Romance Palette and the Antique Rose blusher which I have had a couple of weeks and really can't think of there being a better high street/drugstore combination better for this year's A/W colours. 

I am quite embarrassed to say, I actually keep all my Sleek MakeUP palletes in their boxes. Find it much easier to find which one I want and has absolutely nothing to do with the gorgeous packaging!

Managed to get a day with half decent light so I have swatched these in natural light without a primer. My neighbours were watching me thinking I had probably taken leave of my senses but I don't care as the products are just too great to pass up a blog entry about. Sometimes I buy things that are great and just leave it at that. This isn't one of those times - I want everyone to know how great they are and if they haven't got them yet, maybe help in swinging their decision to do so. 

First up - what arrived from SleekMakeUP. Just a quick aside. Has anyone else who has bought from Sleek MakeUP found their packaging to be fantastic? I live in the Isle of Man so anything I get has an extra boat or plane journey to get to me and everything is always in A1 condition. 

One i-Divine palette in Vintage Romance and one blusher in Antique Rose. I am not into dupes for high end products, I love Sleek MakeUP for what it is. Quality, affordable and (I find especially in the blushes), exceptionally individual. This is Antique Rose - a dark dusky pink that, to be quite honest, scared the bejeezus out of me when I saw it in the pan. I thought it was going to be way to dark for my very fair, freckled complexion. 

It is a beautiful mauve colour with (and you will have to bear with me here as I have cataracts and my colour reception isn't the greatest, so with help from my daughter) a very subtle grey undertone to it. Definitely not a blue, but something that side of the colour wheel. I have pink undertones (as does my daughter) so we are very lucky that we can both use the same colours. 

Here is the information on the back for those that are interested in the contents and the colour code (142). I have had radiotherapy so I do sterilise my makeup frequently with a light spray of surgical spirit and it doesn't change the consistency at all. Just keeps things nice and clean for me. As it has a high alcohol content it also evaporates within seconds and leaves the powder products exactly that - powder. 

One very light sweep and you can see how fantastic it looks out of the pan. A rich, highly pigmented blush that is going to look great for this A/W. No, it isn't going to suit everyone, but I have pale skin, auburn hair and freckles and this is perfect for me. It blends out like a dream. I didn't buy it at the same time, but I did a "one brand face" and this looked fantastic with the palette below, Sleek MakeUP's cream to powder foundation in Linen and their Matte Me lip gloss in Birthday Suit. It really was a great combination for me.

So, with the blusher aside, on to the i-Divine Vintage Romance Palette

Yep - I know the colours are incredibly hard to read due to me only having a bridge camera and very limited photography skills so I have swatched them all below and will go through the names at the same time as the descriptions. 

All the swatches were done without a primer and were literally a "splodge and swipe" with one pass of my finger in the pan. Yet again Sleek MakeUP comes through with the pigmentation.

Rightey ho - the entire palette in one go. Obviously this wasn't going to give the optimum view of the colours so I have done the top row and the bottom separately. Darn my arm for not being double jointed ;)

Top row of the Vintage Romance Palette consists of the following colors, going from left to right:-

Pretty in Paris - silver shimmer

Meet in Madrid - gold shimmer

Court in Cannes - bronze shimmer

Lust in LA - taupe shimmer

Romance in Rome - slate grey matte

Propose in Prague - terracotta matte

And the lower row of the palette, from left to right again :-

A Vow in Venice - dusky pink matte

Marry in Monte Carlo - rose shimmer

Honeymoon in Hollywood - cranberry glitter*

Bliss in Barcelona - grey with purple undertones shimmer

Forever in Florence - aubergine glitter*

Love in London - black glitter*

*although the glitter shades look incredibly glittery in the palette, they are far more subtle on the eye.

All in all, the pigmentation is very consistent. The shimmer shades are incredibly smooth and buttery in consistency, the matte shades make incredible transition shades, or just great shades for daytime on their own and the glitter shades were a fantastic surprise. I was very pleasantly surprised when I swatched them and couldn't have wanted for more.

I have been using this palette for a week now and couldn't be happier. It takes you from day to night so easily and the staying power is exactly what you would expect from Sleek MakeUP. The only shade which isn't as pigmented as the others is Bliss in Barcelona. Some might see that as a negative, but I love it as it makes for a great transition shade. It also does come up very true to what you would expect if you use a primer (the swatches I did were without, and just on my arm).

All in all I am absolutely thrilled with it. To quote one of my favourite bloggers and YouTubers, Amy (her blog is here and her YouTube Channel is here) it is Autumn in a palette for sure.

Am I pleased with it? You betcha. Sleek MakeUP is hands down my favourite high street/drugstore brand out there.

Illamasqua Velvet Blusher Review

Illamasqua has a new blush and I think we are on to a winner with it for sure. It is their Velvet Blusher (found here) and is like nothing I have ever tried before.

I have had this for a week or so now and have been putting it through its paces. First up, the consistency is like nothing I have ever seen or used previously. 

As ever, the inimitable and gorgeous packaging. 

I bought it in the shade "Peaked" which is a stunning dusky rose colour without a trace of blue undertones to it. 

I have to be honest, I photographed this about 50 times and this is the closest I could get to the shade that it is. It is a touch darker than it appears in the pan here. 

Peaked is a cream blush which goes to a velvet finish. Not a cream finish and not a powder finish. Most definitely in between and it is great. The other thing I adore about it is that it is completely matte in its finish too. I like matte finishes as you can either shimmer them up or leave them as they are. Having the choice is a great thing. All the swatches I have done below have been done without a primer or anything to try and get the true colour.

It comes in a bright coral colour too (Sleek), but as I suit pinky tones better that is what I went for. 

Ok, one big splodge on my wrist and you can finally see the proper colour of it. Apologies for the lighting but it is really overcast where I live today and I don't have any "natural light' light bulbs. 

Here it is with flash on for comparison. The texture is said to be cream to powder but it is a little more than that in my humble opinion. It goes on beautifully on the face (I have tried both fingers, brush and beauty blender application and found that the beauty blender worked the best for me). This was one light swipe of the blusher with my finger so you can see just how highly pigmented it is. It is ridiculously pigmented (in a good way) but if you are thinking of getting it, I would definitely go for a tiny amount and then build if you want more. 

It blends out beautifully but you have to be quite quick as it does dry quite quickly out of the pan. I have done it quite heavily here so that you can see what a gorgeous colour it is when blended out. 

What surprised me the most was the finish. Yes, it is a matte powder finish but I certainly couldn't say it was cakey in the least. My skin has dry days and oily days so I have tried it out on both and it performed beautifully. 

On dry days, you can feel they moisture in the cream, but it doesn't flake or sit in fine lines at all. On oily days it is quite mattifying which is exactly what I need. It is genuinely the first time I have found a product that I can use on both types of skin (I literally have two sets of makeup, depending on my skin type in the morning). This is a product that I can use on both days so I am really pleased with that.

The colour, for me, is superb. It adds a lovely flush without giving me the Aunt Sally look (for those of you that are old enough to remember!). 

They staying power of the blusher is incredible too, pretty much on a par with theBalm's Instain blushes but with more control and blendability. I wore it for 14 hours straight and it didn't budge at all.

Would I buy this again? You betcha I would. Finding a good blusher is, for me, quite difficult and I have now done so.

Glossybox September 2013

So, here it is - September 2013's Glossybox blog entry. I was going to do this earlier, but rather than just open it and give my initial opinion, I wanted to open it and give my opinion once I had had a chance to use the products.

There have been so many pictures of the Glossbox floating round the web, I decided to just jump straight in with the contents.

This month's theme was "The London Edition" to coincide with LFW. A gorgeous box with the Union Flag (a.k.a. the Union Jack) on the front of it and in a very patriotic red, white and blue. So, down below is the overall view of the contents. 

What struck me immediately this month (other than the honking great flag on the box lid!) was that we now get a magazine! I don't know if this is going to be a permanent thing or not, but is most certainly is a welcome addition. There are A/W trends covered, interviews with dress designer Mara Hoffman and Nilam Patel, the Co-Director of HD Brows. I did enjoy the "Top 5 Glossybox Office Obsessions" too as it is lovely to see what others enjoy. 

Now, on to the contents of this month's box and what I genuinely thought of them. 

First up - a 5ml sample of Elizabeth Arden's Untold. I was a little wary of this as being a bit of a box filler more than anything. Yes, the bottle was cute but I remember my Grandmother wearing Elizabeth Arden! I opened it and have to be honest, was genuinely quite surprised. Although not a completely modern scent, it came across as quite classy, more of an evening perfume.

I have worn it a couple of times now and have been complimented each time I have which has been a pleasant surprise. Equally surprising is how far 5 ml will go!

I won't be buying this as it is £40 for 50 ml or £69 for 100 ml, but this sample will most definitely be used to the last. It has quite a floral scent with a slight woody undertone to it. If it had been a little cheaper, I think I would most certainly have bought it for sure. 

Next up - some Eyelure Pre-glued false eyelashes. I am going to make a confession. I have only ever worn false eyelashes once in my life and I hated every minute of it. I really really didn't enjoy it at all. I have the utmost admiration for anyone that wears them all the time as I just find them so uncomfortable.

I got them in 190 which actually seem quite a natural looking false lash. 

So, I manned up and gave them a go. I did it without any makeup on my eyes as I just wanted to see how they went. I was genuinely surprised as I found the application quite easy (although I had to cut a few off the inner corner off each as they were a little long for my lids). The best bit? I really loved wearing them! I don't feel disappointed that I didn't keep them for a special occasion as it isn't something I would normally wear (eyelash curlers and mascara are my best friends), but I have bought a couple of pairs for both my wedding anniversary next month and for Christmas, safe in the knowledge that I can actually use them! 

So, Toni and Guy what have you got for me? We have a full size (30 ml) bottle of "Hair Meets Wardrobe" Classic Shine and Gloss Serum (limited edition by Lulu). 

I have an almost slavish devotion to my L'Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil for my really frizzy locks and hey, if it isn't broken, don't fix it. That was until I found myself in hospital last Wednesday for 3 nights respite with my September Glossybox and no Extraordinary Oil. The heat in there was ridiculously drying so I broke the shine gloss serum out to see if I could make my hair look like less of a stack of straw.

First up, the serum is a little more highly scented than I am used to and a lot thicker in consistency too. None the less, I persevered on and popped it in my hair. I have very long hair so 2 pumps rubbed between my hands and I ran it through from the midway sections to the tips.

I was very surprised at the outcome. It was, to put it bluntly, exceptionally good. I have very fine hair and most serums weigh my hair down but this didn't. It really did come good on its claims - my frizz was gone and that was in a very dry environment too.

Will I be buying this once my bottle has run out? I have to be honest, no I won't. What puts me off is the price. It is £7.19 for 30 ml. That is the only negative I could find with this. 

On to "Be a Bombshell Cosmetics" with their Onyx eyliner. I haven't opened it as I have tons on the go at the moment but my daughter also gets Glossybox and she got one too. It is a felt tip style point which (I am reliably informed) gives a medium and thick line with great precision. A thin line it certainly doesn't give, but not everyone wants that. I am not going to open this one just yet either as I really want to give it a go properly, but without ending up with a ton of partially used eyeliners that I have to chuck away. 

As I mentioned, my daughter thinks it is great for a different look (we both love the Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyliner) but she says that she can get a lot of different looks with it.

Unless it really blows me away, I doubt I will be buying it when it runs out as I have never had much luck with felt tip style liners. None the less, I am more than grateful for the chance to try something I would never have picked up normally (which is why I signed up for Glossbox, the chance to try things I wouldn't normally) 

Again, this is a full size item which retails at $14, so more than grateful for the chance to try it. 

Now, on to the last product which, quite honestly, blew me away. HD Brows Bronzer. Firstly, I felt as though I had been spoiled rotten with my Glossybox so far. Secondly, I had no idea that HD Brows did any kind of cosmetics. 

My heart kind of sank when I opened it though...

It doesn't pick up too well on my bridge camera, but it was sparkly. Fortunately, I found out very quickly that it was just a quick spray over the top. Underneath was actually a gorgeous matte bronzer which will be ideal for winter.

The packaging is quite ingenious too, as I absolutely detest having an applicator sponge lying directly on the product. The mirror is more than adequate and the actual compact certainly doesn't feel cheap in the hand.

Which when I swatched it does look glittery but that was me taking the top layer off. Now I have had a chance to use it properly I am beyond impressed with it. I have very pale skin so although it has quite an orange undertone to it, I am able to use to contour for a lovely daytime look. If I was wanting a contour for night time, I would go for something with a more grey undertone to it, but this is a beautiful everyday bronzer for going into Autumn.

On their website (www.hdbrows.com) they have some great tutorials as they have also released a blush too (which my daughter got in her Glossybox and hasn't been off her cheeks since). 

The pigmentation is incredible, the staying power a good 6 hours (and that is from someone who is always brushing their hair away from their face.)

The bottom line of would I buy this again? Absolutely. Although I am a huge fan of Sleek's bronzers and face contour kits, I really do like this for when I want to switch my look up a little. At £19.95 it isn't the cheapest, but you gets what you pay for! 

All in all, I think September's Glossybox absolutely outdid itself this month. I loved everything even though I wouldn't repurchase some of the things (and that is mainly due to price).

I have thoroughly enjoyed using everything apart from the eyeliner (which is remaining unopened so that I can get some proper use out of it).

LoveMeBeauty Box September 2013 (Beauteco Box re branded)

This month, the box formerly known as the Beauteco Box has been re branded as LoveMeBeauty. The format of how you order hasn't been changed at all. For anyone not familiar with it, they have a "boutique" from which you choose one of 3 boxes. There are no surprises with this one, you know exactly what you are getting up front and can pass on a month's subscription if there is nothing to take your fancy. This month, I went for menu 3. 

The website is down for maintenance at the moment so I will come back and edit once it is up with the link, but they can be found at @LoveMeBeauty on Twitter. This is my third month consecutively getting LoveMeBeauty/Beauteco box and I haven't wanted to pass up once yet. I love the element of surprise you get with the other boxes, but I love the fact that you can pick what you would like from a menu on this one. So, on to the actual box...

This one doesn't come with a fancy box inside it - just the outer box with lots of shredded paper packaging to keep the products safe. I haven't had a problem with anything breaking at all so far but have noticed that there only ever seems to be one glass item a month. Saying that, this month's glass item, the little bottle in the middle has actually got me the most excited.

It is a 7.5 sample of Matriskin Collagen Serum. It might sound really small but I have wanted to try this for the longest time. The full size bottle (30 ml) retails at (are you ready for it?) ....€95. That is £79.57 or $126.33 (on today's exchange rates) Yep, you read that one correctly. So for my £12.95 outlay for this month's box I have already got just under £20 worth of product. It isn't actually stated on the menu blurb how much this is, but I have been admiring it from afar for quite some time now. The info on it can be found here. 

I am actually kicking myself today as I got the box yesterday and tried it out last night as per the instructions (half a pipette around upper and lower eyelids and neck). I was a little sceptical as to how it would go that far but BOY it does.

I have really dark sunken circles under my eyes and very crepey lids so popped some on after cleansing last night. By this morning, the difference was so obvious my husband noticed. That would be the same husband that didn't notice I had a fringe/bangs cut in for our wedding last year! I am not going to use it again for a while as I really think this merits a complete blog post of it's own, and I now need to "deflate" my eyes to do a before and after.

I have also done a sneaky. As the boutique at LoveMeBeauty is still open I may have bought another box just for the Matriskin sample. It makes good financial sense! 

Next up is Murad's Osmolyte Tonic. To quote the menu, "This refreshing mist replenishes and moisturises to plump and firm skin. The Duel-phase moisturising system infuses skin with essential nutrients that increase cellular hydration, repair the skin's barrier and soothe skin. Suitable for all skin types".

It is a lovely 15 ml full size product (I am not joking, the info is here and is £10 alone)  but given the extreme reaction (of the best kind) I had to the Matriskin, I am keeping this to one side until I have horrible eyes again!

It has a gorgeous smell of very mild chamomile. This one will be going into my "things to try out" basket for sure. 

Next up I got Nip and Fab's Clean Fix Gel. I am guessing this will be a marmite product as it is a foaming facial cleanser but I have to be honest, I genuinely don't mind them once in a while. It is generous full size product and more information can be found on their website here. It is on offer at the moment for £4.95 so I am going to give this one a try very soon. It has quite a strong citrus note to the smell, but that is something I love as bergamot is my favourite scent ever. Yep, the face gel smells of Earl Grey tea! It is for oily/combination skin which is fantastic as... that is what I have! 

Ahh, Anatomicals. Not a month goes by when you don't appear in one of the beauty boxes out there. This month it is a zit stick! It appears to have a day and night treatment but I am not going to open it just yet as I don't have any breakouts. That will definitely go in the "to try" basket as I do get hormonal ones and it would be great to see if it works. After either 1) being an idiot or 2) navigating the world's worst website ever I have deduced that it retails for £3.00. I tried linking it. I can't! 

Last but not least, a 30 ml sample of Essential Care Gentle Herb Shampoo. The first thing that jumped out at me was that it claimed to be 70% organic. Sooo, it isn't then! I generally dislike organic shampoos as they generally just smell horrible. This, however, really does smell nice. It smells very strongly of aloe vera which might put some people off, but I actually like it very much. One thing I will say is that is incredibly thin in consistency for a shampoo. It also claims to not need a conditioner. My frizzy locks might disagree but I am going into hospital for respite next week for a few days so I shall pop that in my bag to give it a try. I will be taking conditioner though! Definitely on the fence on this one, and more information can be found on it here. 

So there we have it, the inaugural LoveMeBeauty box and even though I chose the items, it did not disappoint in the least. I really am looking forwards to trying everything out, especially the Matriskin Collagen Serum. My "things to try" basket just got a whole lot more products in it this month for sure!

If anyone else has had this box (I got menu 3) I would love to hear how you got on with the products. I sometimes find that something doesn't work for me but find out later I have been using it wrong so yep, would love to hear anyone's thoughts.
